We did this cruise in 2001. In Halifax we did the Harbour Hopper vehicle that does a tour of Halifax and then plunges into the Harbour for a tour from that perspective. If you are on Carnival you should know that they will keep you ship's time so adjust your reservations accordingly. The Maritime Museum is also a must see in Halifax. If you want to see Peggy's Cove there is a boat that goes their from Halifax, a better option then spending several hours on a bus. When you get off the ship in Halifax you can walk to the Maritime Museum and the center of the tourist district-go right and it is about a 15 walk. If you want to do a private tour of Halifax there will be many taxi drivers at the pier who are more than willing to give you a private tour for less than the ship's excursions. There are also college kids that pull rickshaws back and forth from the tourist area to the dock. In St. John's I did a ship excursion to go kayacking and then a lobster lunch. My husband and mother took a ship's tour to the Moosehead Brewery. When leaving both St. John and Halifax there will be a bagpiper serenading the ship as she leaves. Really special! Feel free to email me at eandjracquet@hotmail.com -this particular cruise was my fifth. Also-when we went it was very foggy the first sea day-beware that the fog horn goes off once every minute-literally, day and night. I had a spa treatment that first day and I could hear it in the interior treatment room. I would think if you booked an outside room towards the front of the ship you would hear it in there. We had an interior room towards the rear of the ship and didn't hear anything.

There are some excellent pubs in St John's and Halifax and if you're lucky, you'll catch some local performers there. The east coast music is fantastic. Probably you don't want to spend all of your shore leave in a bar (well, I don't know, maybe you do) but you should try some of the local brew and the people there are great.
