Yep, it's certainly true with certain lines. The men are often near 70 themselves! I don't think the cruise line actually pays them, they just get free food and a cabin?
Cruising is certainly a wonderfully comfortable and safe method of travel for the elderly.

Who said HAL was boring?!
Believe me these gentlemen are kept very busy dancing with the ladies. However, HAL does not allow any hanky-panky while on board.
I think you are right Malcolm that they are not paid - just get room and board. Often they will host a table in the dining room on formal nights.
