I'm going on an Alaska cruise with mother-in-law in May on HAL. It's her first cruise. It's her first trip anywhere. Please forgive if this is a totally stupid question. I've travelled all over the world but cruising is not something with which I'm familiar.

Is it true that there are men hired to dance with women because there are more single women on cruises than there are men? Do men ask 70 year old women to dance?

Yep, it's certainly true with certain lines. The men are often near 70 themselves! I don't think the cruise line actually pays them, they just get free food and a cabin?

Cruising is certainly a wonderfully comfortable and safe method of travel for the elderly.

I'm sure a HAL regular will reply to you.

HAL even confirms it in their latest magazine:

"During longer cruises, we have attractive men onboard who accompany ladies during diner and dance"

Who said HAL was boring?!

Yes, Tamara it's true that HAL hires gentlemen escorts to dance with the ladies, but only on longer cruise of 14 days or more. Not sure about the 10 day cruises as I haven't done one for a while, but I will be on one in May so will check it out.

Believe me these gentlemen are kept very busy dancing with the ladies. However, HAL does not allow any hanky-panky while on board.

I think you are right Malcolm that they are not paid - just get room and board. Often they will host a table in the dining room on formal nights.
