In the upcomming weeks I will be getting ready to sail on my first trans Atlantic voyage. I was introduced to cruising in April 1974 when my grandparents took my brother and I on the ss FRANCE out of Boston. Since then I have been hooked. When I meet my wife I introduced her to cruising but she has always gotton sick. Our first cruise together was on the old Statendam. She really got sick on that first trip. Since then we have tried almost everything from shots to patches and they didn't work. Last year I thought the QE2 would be big enough prevent the sickness but she still got sick. In April we are booked on the QM2 and I have a bad feeling that my wife will get sick on her. I've told her the ship is very big and she should be OK but deep down I am nervous. I hate seeing her get sick and I am worried that if she gets sick on the QM2 (the biggest ship) that she may hesitate to sail on anything smaller.

On the last cruise we were on we spoke to some folks who told us they always got sick until they discovered some type of pill that they take. They said that they take this pill and it prevents them from getting motion sickness.

Having viewed the Travel page's notes over the years I don't think there are more qualified individuals that I can turn to. Help!

See your doctor and get a prescription strength pill. Motion sickness comes from the inner ear I believe and a regular doctor should be able to help-maybe an ear specialist could as well. Have fun on QM2!!

Have her try Bonine - it can be bought at the druge store. She should start taking it a couple of days before you travel and then take the prescribed dosage every day, regardless of how she is feeling.

I use the one that calls for one pill a day and I take it at night.

Hope this helps - nothing worse than being sea sick. Remember my first cruise on the old Volendam - I was ready to get off in the first port and fly home without my husband. Second and third cruise were the same, but I finally asked my doctor for something and she gave me Meclizine - at the time you needed a prescription - Meclizine is the generic name for Bonine and other such drugs.

Good luck and hope you have a wonderful time.

Forgot to add - Maasdam is right - stay out in the fresh air as much as possible and keep eating and drinking even if it's only water or ginger ale. Soda crackers helped me.

Sky Room - good advice! and while you're with the Doc. ask about Ginger Capsules - a natural remedy!

Hi Doug and Leslie,

Cunard gives out phenergan tablets for the seasick and they work!

I got mildly uncomfortable on the 2nd day of QE2. The 10' whitecaps didn't phase me. 2nd day the 20' swells hit me about 9am, but was able to eat and keep food down. Mal de Mer hit my tablemate about 4pm that day but was fine all morning and afternoon. It could have been the raw clams the night before.

The best prevention and remedy is Cannibas Sativa.

Could your tablemate have been stoned when he ate the raw clams?

Cheers

That particular tablemate, that would not surprise me. However I no longer eat raw clams.

What I have found is no 2 people are alike. Some people get sick if the ship is in drydock. My parents and grandparents sail thru hurricane conditions and are fine. I am a pretty good sailor, but not immune.

PS: The smoothest part of the SSNorway was the Roman Spa, the QE2 is the circular entrance lobby.
Circular rooms reduce the rolling sensation.

Pass the bong

Ginger. I have suffered motion sickness from childhood, always the kid getting sick on the bus or in the car (really not a popular choice on road trips). As an adult, I still sometimes get sick and the best remedy is ginger caps. They're good for your circulation, anyway, so no harm in taking them. You have to figure out your dosage, too little is not effective, but too much might give you heartburn. I think if you pop one every few hours, you might be OK.

Desirod - Phenegrin works because it knocks you out!

Just read up on it. http://www.healthsquare.com/newrx/phe1332.htm

"Phenergan may cause considerable drowsiness."

I'd stick to the Meclizine (Bonamine, etc) or the ginger - they won't make you sleepy.

Recommending any 'preventive medication' for anything is always risky - so many people these days are taking meds. for one thing or another. Ginger, a natural substance, does not seem to affect or be affected by prescription drugs.

Your own metabolism and body weight should be taken into account. At 100 lbs. soaking wet, I find that the label prescribed intake of ginger works for me......ancient Chinese remedies are not to be ignored.

PHENERGAN HAS BEEN A LIFESAVER FOR ME. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT FOR ANYONE THAT HAS A TERRIBLE TIME WITH SEA SICKNESS. I AM VERY PETITE AND HAVE ALWAYS TAKEN IT WITHOUT THE DROWSINESS THAT CAN OCCUR WITH IT. IF YOU'RE ACTIVE YOU WON'T GET DROWSY. BETTER TO BE A LITTLE SLEEPY THAN VERY SICK. EVERY 12 HOURS AND CRUISING IS A BREEZE EVEN IN THE ROUGHEST OF SEAS.
I LEARNED ABOUT THIS PRODUCT ON MY FIRST CRUISE, THE REGAL EMPRESS. FIRST NIGHT I DID FINE. NEXT DAY SEAS WERE ROUGHER AND I WAS FEELING IT. THAT NIGHT WAS THE CAPTAIN'S DINNER. I WAS FEELING NAUSEATED BUT DETERMINED I WASN'T GOING TO MISS MY FIRST CAPTAIN'S DINNER. MY BEST FRIEND AND I GOT ALL DRESSED AND HEADED TO THE DINING ROOM. OUR WONDERFUL WAITER AND BUSBOY TOOK ONE LOOK AT ME AND REALIZED I WAS NOT WELL. THE WAITER BROUGHT ME CRACKERS AND GINGER ALE. NOT EXACTLY WHAT I HAD IN MIND FOR DINNER BUT APPRECIATED NONETHELESS. IT WAS NOT LONG THOUGH WHEN I KNEW I WAS I WAS IN TROUBLE. THE BUSBOY HAD BEEN WATCHING ME AND CAME RUNNING OVER WITH THE TUB THEY PUT DIRTY DISHES IN. HE ARRIVED JUST IN TIME FOR ME TO LOSE IT AT THE TABLE IN FRONT OF EVERYONE. IT WAS TOTALLY EMBARASSING BUT THE STAFF SPRANG INTO ACTION. THE ASSISTANT MAITRE'D GOT ME A WHEELCHAIR AND SHE PUSHED ME TO THE INFIRMARY(ALONG WITH MY FRIEND). THE DOCTOR WAS GREAT. GAVE ME A SHOT OF COMPAZINE AND A BOTTLE OF PHENERGAN. SINCE WE WERE PORTING THE NEXT DAY AND THE COMPAZINE WOULD KNOCK ME OUT FOR THE NIGHT HE TOLD ME TO TAKE 1 PILL AN HOUR BEFORE WE DEPARTED AND EVERY 12 HOURS AFTER THAT. I HAVE NOT BEEN SEASICK AGAIN AND I HAVE SAILED IN SOME VERY HIGH SEAS. I AM GOING ON MY 14TH CRUISE IN SEPTEMBER AND WILL BE GETTING A PRESCRIPTION FROM MY DOCTOR. HAVE PHENERGAN WILL CRUISE. OTHERS HAVE BEEN SICK AND I'M SMILING. HOPE YOU HAVE A GREAT CRUISE AND MY THOUGHTS ARE WITH YOUR WIFE.

I recommend taking ginger pills twice a day for 7 days before the cruise and then while on the cruise. I tend to get motion sick (even riding in the back of a car) and this rememdy worked for me except in the most extreme conditions-the edge of a tropical depression on board the Regal Empress (ex-Olympia/Rolympia) in a suite at the top deck in the front of the ship. I did have to resort to standard medication as the ship both pitched and rolled.

As much as I am embarassed to admit this, my husband-who got very, very ill on our first cruise on the Song of America to Bermuda-does say that cannibis helps alot-he was not the running to the pursers office for standard medication on the Regal Empress! But, given the tightened security and political climate it is not a method I would recommend-ginger it will be.

True to form. The Greek Line Rollympia/Regal Empress is one of the most volitale ships out there. When I sailed her as a child b4, she got fin stabilizers, thru the Gulf Stream in December, the crew put out vomit cups everywhere.

Last night of the cruise at a costume party. Somebody wore 30 vomit cups, called it "Greek Line Chow Mein" and won first prize.

Update:

Thanks all for your recommendations.
What I got my wife got was Bonine (thanks Sympatico). The only downside is it is not advised to drink alcohol and sometimes you can get drowsy. She started taking it as soon as she got on board QM2 in England.

I am so happy I got this for her as our voyage across the Atlantic was quite rough. Seas started kicking up on Saturday night and remained that way till late Monday evening. During that 2 1/2 day period we experienced 2 seperate force 10 storms. The seas ranged from 30 to 40 feet and the winds were around 60 mph. Through all that she didn't sick!

Thanks Again!

You are welcom. So glad it worked for your wife. Nothing worse than being seasick and miserable on a crossing. It's worked for me since I started taking it.
