They are not compulsory, but I'd have them!
Also, according to Health and Welfare Canada, malaria has become a problem in the Dominican Republic, Haiti and possibly other Caribbean locations in recent months. (The CDC site should have the latest info on where and what medication is recommended). The medication needed depends on what strain is prevalent but typically you must take it 1 week before entering the infected zone, once a week while in the zone and once a week for eight to eleven weeks after you leave the zone. We did this same itinerary and our Doc purely said nothing is absolutely required, I cannot tell you not to have anything, but for a few hours visit I would not worry. As Brian said, things do change quite often. But don't listen to us, or any forum, only your Doctor/Health Practice knows you and he/they will have the latest list of what's what.

Unfortunately Doctors have differing opinions and sources of information too!
If you ask what is reccomended (not required) for your own country, you may be surprised!

Hmm...this is an emotive topic!
Car seatbelts used to be 'reccomended', but were not compulsory in the UK - but I always chose to wear one.
A Doctor can't tell you to have the jabs, but the word 'reccomend' suggests to me you should.

Even if visiting an area for a few hours, there is still some risk.
However, as Pam said It is a very personal decision.
