We're taking a cruise on NCL's Sun to "exotic western Caribbean" which goes to Belize, Cozumel, Honduras, and Grand Cayman. We've seen info that says we should have Hepatitis A and Typhoid shots. What have you guys done about this?
Thanks,
Susan

They are not compulsory, but I'd have them!

You should take a look at the CDC's (Center for Disease Control in Atlanta) web site for the latest information on what is required and what is recommended for each of the countries you will be calling at. For shots for typhoid and Hepatitis A you should also ask your family doctor for recommendations. Keep in mind that some immunizations require multiple shots about a week or two apart if you have never had that shot before. So, the sooner you find out what's required the better.

Also, according to Health and Welfare Canada, malaria has become a problem in the Dominican Republic, Haiti and possibly other Caribbean locations in recent months. (The CDC site should have the latest info on where and what medication is recommended). The medication needed depends on what strain is prevalent but typically you must take it 1 week before entering the infected zone, once a week while in the zone and once a week for eight to eleven weeks after you leave the zone.

Click HERE to get to the CDC web site.

Immunisation is not a requirement for any of these countries as you are on a cruise, not staying ashore and not going into the deep interiors. Some shots are recommended when staying, some are highly recommended when staying for an extended term.
It does also depend on what your own current state of health is and whether you yourself may be susceptible to anything in particular. Only your own doctor can advise you there.

We did this same itinerary and our Doc purely said nothing is absolutely required, I cannot tell you not to have anything, but for a few hours visit I would not worry. As Brian said, things do change quite often. But don't listen to us, or any forum, only your Doctor/Health Practice knows you and he/they will have the latest list of what's what.

Why? Vaccines themselves can cause their own complications. Never have them is not required.
Pam.. speaking from experience here and nearly didn't make it

Unfortunately Doctors have differing opinions and sources of information too!

If you ask what is reccomended (not required) for your own country, you may be surprised!

Hmm...this is an emotive topic!

Car seatbelts used to be 'reccomended', but were not compulsory in the UK - but I always chose to wear one.

A Doctor can't tell you to have the jabs, but the word 'reccomend' suggests to me you should.

Pam Said: I cannot tell you not to have anything, but for a few hours visit I would not worry.

Even if visiting an area for a few hours, there is still some risk.

However, as Pam said It is a very personal decision.
