I seem to recall a thread with this topic some time ago, however, I thought it would be fun to renew the conversation. Who has met some famous people while cruising or crossing? Do you have a photo to share of you with this person?

Helen Hayes was on the MISSISSIPPI QUEEN during the 1982 Great Steamboat Race between New Orleans and Cincinnati. She was truly a beautiful and gracious lady. Likewise for the Hon. Leonore K. Sullivan, Congresswomen from Missouri who was on the DELTA QUEEN during the race.

The only famous person I have met was Marvin Hamlish on the inaugural of one of the RCI ships - he and his wife and I shared an elevator for several decks. We also sailed from Prague to Budapest with Ed Harris parents on the River Princess and he came to meet them at the ship when we docked in Budapest - but that is my only celebrity experience

I should also mention that we had the pleasure of crossing on QE2 with prpducer/ author Steven Rivellino and had numersou fun filled days/ dinners/ evenings with him and others we have met

When I worked for RCI many a year ago, I was able to meet Mary Wilson (of the Diana Ross and the Supremes fame), we threw her a birthday party one week and had a fantastic time with her, she was great.

On that same trip we hosted Jerry Lewis (one of the best personal shows I had ever seen in person, just after the birth of his child) aboard the Majesty of the Seas, and Toni Tennille of the Captain and Tennille fame aboard the Sovereign.

There was an entertainer who used to sail aboard the S.S. Dolphin (he was a gay entertainer) and he used to do some really great material - in drag and out. The name escapes me. Maybe Ernie would remember him.

Was it the late Charles Pierce? He was a famous drag performer some years ago.

The most famous person I met (actually spoke w/a few times) onboard a ship was Cary Grant on ss Mariposa in the late 1970s. There was also the actress/dancer Rita Moreno on QE2. My friends were on a QM2 crossing a few months ago and 1940s/ 50s bombshell Jane Russell was onboard. She introduced her and Marilyn Monroe's classic film 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes' which was set onboard a luxury liner.

Here's a pic of yours truly and Bert Lancaster taken onboard SEA PRINCESS in 1987. We were sailing from Bangkok to Sydney Australia.

Other "stars" I have sailed with include Sandra Bernhard on an RSVP cruise in 1996, and Melissa Etheridge and her entourage onboard CROWN PRINCESS in 1990.

To be honest I don't think too many celebrities cruise (at least on commercial ships) as a vacation option. Most want more privacy and book private yachts and exclusive resorts in remote locations.

Remember, in general "cruising" is no longer seen as an exclusive and glamorous vacation. It's for the masses these days and I would think most celebrities don't want to deal with the masses on their time off.

I had the opportunity to interview Frankie Avalon, and my wife had her picture taken with him. Actually sang a song I requested. A reall nice guy. He did walk around the ship greeting passengers. Usually most entertainers are not seen before or after their performance. Also met Jim Nabors on a Hawaii cruise--Gomer Pyle.

Florence Henderson and her husband sailed with us as passengers while I was working aboard CROWN MONARCH in October, 1991. Actually her husband, a famed hypnotist, performed for the passengers, while Florence stayed low; we climbed Dunns River Falls with her, and she was on the bridge as a guest during our famous (infamous) collision with SEAWARD in Ocho Rios!

Ernie I agree. I don't think you will come across many of todays celebrities on a cruise. If you did come across one they tend to be older Hollywood celebrities (like the late Burt Lancaster) and they sailed on more premium lines. Up until the 1980s some big stars such as Bob Hope and Cary Grant cruised on the Independence and Constitution and Lucille Ball was a semi regular on Matson and Pacific Far East Line up until the late 1970s. That was a different pre-paparazzi era when stars could lead semi public lives. Today's stars usually charter a yacht if they want a sea cruise and of course fly on their private jet to get there.

Rod Stewart still crosses on QM2 and used to cross on QE2 before that. I think he was hanging out with Malcolm on his last crossing...

How large the fraction aboard cruise ships is can of course be discussed - and for various reasons nowadays cruise ships are certainly not appealing to many 'celebrities' - but there are still some e.g. the Europa frequently hosts 'celebrities' (of the German speaking world).

That would have ended my career earlier.

I do have a theory that many of the cruise ship jumpers of late had been listening to Britney Spears music just prior to thier plummet to the sea. Further, am I the only person who believes she is making dolphin calls in her music? There must be a connection.

Mike - I'm surprised that you didn't meet Margaret O'Brien as she was on the HAL ships a few times when were were on board!

Marty Allen, his wife Katie and Steve Rossi were on the Westerdam in '89 when we were on board taking the ship back to Germany for stretch and then again in April '90 when she returned. Katie and Marty were always around the ship interacting with passengers.

There have been other celebrities we have met on HAL ships in the early days, but I can't rememer their names now.

Brilliant TampaMike!

I recall when I was working on the Song of America that the original butler from the Batman TV show was a passenger. I didn't get a chance to meet him or even see him, but was assured he was aboard.

I wonder just how many celebrities covertly cruise these days? I know Regis has cruised a number of times.

I sailed on MSC Opera last September immediately after the Venice Film Festival. I would have loved Audrey Tatou to share my voyage with me, but I got Jon Lovitz instead (he was famous enough for me to recognise him from his films, but not so famous that i knew his name). He also wore an I love Greece T-shirt in Turkey, which is about as big a faux pas as he could make.
