More and more gay couple and lesbian couples are adopting children, and in the case of lesbians artificial insemination or adoption. It is a natural way to curb the abortion rate.

The 'gayby' families I have met are more domestic than Ozzie and Harriet and patient parents. The children I have seen are well adjusted for the most part.

Offerings now are the swinging Mutiny and mayhem/Pillage and Plunder cruises to the more sedate Atlantis, RSVP in between and women only Olivia.

Here the parents and children can be with those they identify with for a cruise vacation

SoBeTim, do you think in a few years there will be children's activities on gay and lesbian cruises for those who have 2 mommies or 2 daddies?

Of the gay families I know, at least two have talked about cruising, and how they wished they could find the "right" cruise. When I asked them to define what kind of cruise they would like, I expected to hear them talk about destinations or price. Instead I heard about desires for a family environment they could feel comfortable in. My suggestion to them was for both families to cruise together, since one has two mommies and the other two daddies. They liked my idea, but did mention that they'd like to be able to enjoy the romantic aspects of the cruise as well, without being made to feel uncomfortable.

Seems like a reasonable request, and I'll bet some open-minded straight families might even take advantage of the type of cruise desirod suggests.

Desirod,

There's a spread in the current issue of Passport Magazine that features 'Family Cruises" aboard NCL for Gay and Lesbian couples who have children.

So yes, I think this is a huge untapped market and one that will continue to grow and prosper. It also signals to me that NCL thinks "outside the box" in more ways than one and treads where others fear to go.

Desirod,

as a coda to my previous post, a friend who works for Disney tells me that they have seen a HUGE increase in gay family travel; both in the theme parks and aboard the ships.

I think this is due to the fact that Disney has always been a very 'open' organization that welcomes everyone, regardless of their lifestyle.

To no great surprise, my last cruise aboard Disney was overflowing with gay men & women; quite a few with children; and the only thing I noticed was how well everyone interacted with one another and their children. Everyone just got along, a very open and accepting atmosphere; something that I laud Disney and my fellow passengers for.

Thank you Tim. I forsee Oceania being as inclusive as Disney and NCL.

It is a $54 billion market

Gay and lesbian family cruises are a reality!

Rosie O'Donnell enters the gay/lesbian family vacation business. Here is a link to her new company catering to gay and lesbian family vacations and a press release. First trip is a cruise on the chartered NORWEGIAN DAWN in summer 2004.

This comes as no surprise, especially considering Disney was one of the first large corporations to offer domestic partner benefits. Also, thanks to Disney, Orlando was recently rated as one of the "gayest" cities in America. There is something about Disney that gay men love. Need I even mention 'gay days' at Disney.

I hope that Rosie's idea is very successful, and that traditional families are greeted with open arms too! That way it can be clear to all how nurturing, loving, and caring gay and lesbian parents can be!
