What are propulsion pods, I guess they are not propellers ? I also heard that the Queen Mary 2 is said to be the first with four propulsion pod and two will move so I guess there will be no rudder on this ship. Ğraikar IP: Logged |

Here's some more info on pod propulsion from Cruise News - March 1998:"The propulsion systems of the future cruise ships will more then likely be more podded units... Podded propulsion systems are when the motor is situated outside the hull of the ship, within the propeller pod. Carnival's Elation, Paradise, and RCI's eagle class ships are using the Azipod systems. Although the Azipod system has been successfully used on icebreakers, tankers and other service ships, the Carnival's Elation will be the first cruise ship to use it. The Azipod units on the Elation will pull the ship through the water rather then conventional system of pushing it through the water. Royal Caribbean's Eagle-Class ships will have three Azipod units; two will be rotating units that will pull the ship and one fixed (not rotating) that will push." Joe at TravelPage.com IP: Logged |

I noticed on the VOTS standing outside on the promenade deck at the stern it was very noisy.Louder than any other ship I've been on,maybe because of the three props instead of two? I would think they would lower than the conventional shaft prop and therefor be quieter? I think they worked well,I didn't hear or feel any noise or vibration in the dining room leaving port on our cruise anyway.IP: Logged |

Draikar, you can go to: http://www.ship-technology.com and then enter in the "propulsion" section to see pictures and learn more about this system.IP: Logged |
