Anyone interested in which new ships are scheduled to enter service over the next five years might want to check out our recently updated page at: http://www.cruiseserver.net/travelpage/articles/new_build.asp

Thanks Joe - Looking at that list I thought to myself "where's it all going to end". They just keep bringing out more and more bigger ships and the day will come when they won't be able to fill them. Also, there will be so many ships out there they will be running into each other !!!! Just like cars - far too many on the road - with cars the air is polluted and with the ships the oceans and seas will be polluted. Maybe I am wrong, but I am sure the day will come when they stop new builds. Look at how many cruise lines have been taken over by Carnival. The small ones can't last.

Sympatico you must not forget that there are many old cruise ships still sailing and companies have to gradually replace them by newbuilds, besides the number of people wanting to cruising is higher than the number of beds available.
Joe I've found a error in the list. Silver Whisper is listed to start sailing in 2004 when in fact she will be starting her cruises on July 2001. SilverSea Cruises had a little problem with name Silver Mirage because an hotel in Las Vegas had is name registered as "Silver Mirage" and they considered it to a copyright infringment and tried to sue SilverSeas for that.

Financial news like RCL's, explains the increasing number of newbuilds:

"Royal Caribbean announced record third-quarter results earlier this week. Net income increased 18.5% to $201.5 million, in
the third quarter of 2000, compared to $170.0 million, in the same quarter of 1999.

Revenues were $835.2 million for the third quarter of 2000, as compared with $734.5 million for the same quarter in 1999. The increase in revenues is attributable to a 17.9% increase in capacity primarily as a result of Voyager of the Seas and Millennium joining the fleet. Occupancy for the quarter was 109.7%, up slightly from last year's 109.0%."

Sympatico, I recall that only about 10% of vacations are cruises, so there is room for more growth. However, I agree that it will not last forever. One day there will be a lot of empty cabins and fantastic discounts available!

One final thought - I bet that these new 'giants' will not last as long as the likes of the QE2 and Norway. Maybe they will one day be replaced with smaller ships as the 'tide turns', so to speak?

I know that I'm a bit of a nerd, but for your information Joe's list equals:

4,613,560 Gross Tons of Newbuilds over the next five years!

That's 108,426 passengers

Which is very approximately 54,000 new cabins

Just think of all that fun!

(O.K, I know, I need to get out more )

Nerdy or not that is a lot of passengers! Did you figure how many tons, rooms, etc will be retired? I hope you are right about the tide turning back to say 800-900 passengers but I doubt it.

At present we have a choice of smaller ship and mega ships, older ships and newer ships. It will not be too long before all of the 'classic' ships and ex-Ocean Liners are gone forever. That will be a sad day There will be little choice left.

So make the most of the QE2, Norway, Rembrant etc while we still have them.

Malcolm--do you know something that I don't? I thought the Rembrandt was in bondage to creditors. Will she sail again? I hope so--we remember her from her last voyage as Rotterdam V and loved her.

No tomc...but I think we can calculate this based on the formular:

1 day of cruising = 1 pound weight gain

I try to eat sensibly (ha ha ha) and do stairs exclusively. No elevators. That helps. What doesn't help is returning to my somewhat sedentary job. I keep my weight easier on a cruiseship than I do at work!

tomc, it strikes me that there is a paradox on board a ship! Half of the ships staff are trying to get you fit, the other half is trying to get you fat!

Personally I always feel that the 'fat' half are so much more persuasive than the 'fit' half

(Maybe the sea air just makes all our cloths shrink?)
