I'd heard that the Deutschland's interiors were pretty impressive, but WOW! See for yourself: http://www.cruise-addicts.com/picturepost/ Use menu to find 'Deutschland 1999'. There are lots of pictures of other cruise ships too. (Bigger versions on the web site - yes I can't spell Deutschland!) [This message has been edited by Malcolm (edited 09-03-2000).] IP: Logged |

"The exterior of the Deutschland is white with red trim, and looks somewhat ordinary. The interior is something else. When you step on board, the 1920's ambience makes you feel like you are visiting an old movie set. As advertised in all of the cruise literature and web pages, the ship's overall appearance takes you back to a 1920's grand hotel and the "golden age" of cruising. Brass, marble, teak, and crystal are evident throughout. The ship is a true ocean liner, and only accommodates 513 guests."

Joe, you dark horse. What type of itinerary did you do? Have you posted your review yet - I think not? I assume that a cruise on her cost a small fortune? IP: Logged |

What a beautiful ship - the interiors are magnificent. You did post a review, did you not Joe? I seem to remember one. Will look for it now. Do you know what ship just cruised the Great Lakes leaving from Chicago? A friend who lives in Owen Sound (Lake Huron) saw it in the harbour the other day. She couldn't remember the name, but thought it said Hapsburg on it. I seem to remember someone mentioning a ship leaving from Chicago on either this forum or another one. She said the passengers were all German. FOUND IT - MALCOLM, JUST CLICK ON "DREAM CRUISES" AND THERE IT IS.[This message has been edited by sympatico (edited 09-02-2000).] IP: Logged |

I was looking at your pictures again, and I can't get over how much that ship looks like a HAL ship. That stack is a HAL stack. Joe, Put your hand over the ship, leaving only the stack showing and tell me what you think. Even the log on it looks similar to the HAL logo. Joe - maybe this is the ship you should choose for our group cruise!!!!!!!!!!!!! The interiors really are magnificent. Were there many Americans and Canadians on board or was it mostly Europeans?IP: Logged |

What a gorgeous interior! I really think the outside is nearly as bad as the Viking Serenade, but not quite. Seeing these pictures makes me feel worse for those poor passengers on the Air France Concorde.Paddy. IP: Logged |

My goodness, this really is a super looking ship! And yes, wouldn't it be perfect for a "Cruise Talk" convention/cruise? Can you imagine how we would all look on a Formal Night in those surroundings? Talk about feeling part of a movie set....how about "An Affair To Remember,Part II"????????How about it,Joe? TL :-)) IP: Logged |

What a superb ship it must be a thrill to set foot on board after thinking she would be plain from her exterior. I can just imagine the first hour, rushing all over the ship to see everything and almost wishing I wouldn't have to unpack.IP: Logged |

We were on her last year while she was visiting Washington D.C. We were only on for a day but she was magnificent. Her interiors are beautiful and the service was superb - truly an exceptional ship. That being said, she is not for everyone. Among other things, the attitude is more formal that most ships so it might not appeal to a large cross section of CruiseTalkers. I am still working on putting something together for the group, but have been consumed by other projects lately. I'll post an update soon. Joe at TravelPage.com

I first saw pictures of her interior a couple of months back in Porthole magazine. I flipped! It was like going back in time and seeing color photos of the interiors of the likes of RMS Mauretania, the Imperator, et al. Truly impressive and brilliantly designed. My complements to the chef, so to speak!IP: Logged |

Her interiors prove that it can still be done. It also reminds me how tasteless some modern ships actually interiors are! IP: Logged |

..I just tried the 'Babel Fish' translator on 'Das Traum Schiff' (see funnel) as I can't read German!"The Dream Ship" - I don't disagree! www.uk.altavista.com (UK) or www.altavista.com (US) Then click on translate for Babel Fish [This message has been edited by Malcolm (edited 09-06-2000).] IP: Logged |

Indeed, a ship of dreams. I'll just have to keep dreaming for the money to sail on her. I've heard she's quite expensive. Then again, with an interior like that, it's not surprising.IP: Logged |

What would one pay for a cruise on this ship? I remember when the Concorde went down the news said that its passengers paid around £2000 or £6000 (more likely the latter but I can't remember) for their two week cruise (I think it might have been longer), a brief stay in New York, return Concorde flights from Paris and transfers from Germany. I may be wrong.Paddy. IP: Logged |

Paddy, I think that it maybe costs more than Airtours or Fred Olsen! Maybe if we search we can find some on line prices? Maybe the ship/cruise line has a web site?IP: Logged |

I've just recieved my copy of Peter Deilmann's MS Deutschland's brouchure for 2001 called "Grand Hotel Voyages" and WOW! I requested it via the above web site, it's well worth a look, if only for the photographs of the interiors. The prices are not exactly cheap, but on the other hand it is a unique ship! The onboard language is German and English. I might just save up my pennies and go?

Malcolm - talked to my TA yesterday and she said they might consider doing a group cruise on her next year. If the price is right, I might go. Will let you know via e-mail. Ha, I just looked at the prices for a single/outside. I think I am staying at home![This message has been edited by sympatico (edited 09-14-2000).] IP: Logged |

MS Deutschland will visit the UK (Dover) next year Sympatico, us Brits are used to paying more for our cruises. I can fly from the UK to the Caribbean for a cruise, cheaper than I can take a European cruise from a British port! Although the Deutschland is far from cheap, the prices are not as high as I expected! In favt they are of a similar 'order' to P&O's cruises from Dover, UK. Mind you, I would strruggle to pay for anything better than an inside cabin, let alone an outside. However she does look special. Maybe my TA might give me 10% off the brouchure price? There does not seem to be any other discounts on offer? PS. I like the fact that the Deutschland does not have a Casino or Disco in keeping with the period concept! Just heard the following from a friend whose husband is Chief Officer of a cruise ship docked in Sydney Harbour, - "We are in the next bay with the Deutschland and have a great view of the Opera House and the bridge. When they lit the rings and had fire works we had prime viewing position. There are more ships over in Darling" Opera House. Wouldn't that be great living on a cruise ship like the Deutschland and using it as your home base while at the Olympics. Last night, while watching the medal ceremonies as one of our CANADIAN athletes won the Gold Medal in the Triathalon, I noticed a beautiful white cruise ship in the background. Turns out this is the Crystal Harmony. Did any see this ship? Malcolm - I know you Brits can cruise in the Carib cheaper than Europe and you can probably do it cheaper than we Canadians. It's not fair, is it. It's that darned Canadian $. IP: Logged |

Malcolm. How could you be depressed (unless you don't speak a word of German that is (and whaddya know, I started a night class two weeks ago). What a gorgeous ship! And the prices were so surprising! £949 sterling for 9 nights from Dover to Edinburgh! I will have to look at it again to see when, but considering next summer Airtours will be charging as much as £1150 standard inside for 7 nights on the Seawing! Its maybe not the nicest itinerary, but there are some nice stops in Ireland (Dublin, Cork, and Belfast) and some nice places in mainland Britain too, so have we found our group cruise???Paddy. P.S. The itinerary reminds me of a question I want to post. More later.
